Telecoms Masts Installation By Phelan Haulage
This week saw the specialist transport of these tall telecoms masts and then installation using our fleet of HIAB vehicles. This was completed by both our DAF XF510 Artic lorry along with Palfinger PK62000 EH crane; as well as our our Volvo FH540 truck combined with a Cormach 65000 E6 crane.

Telecommunications Masts
Telecommunications, also known as telecom, is the exchange of information over significant distances by electronic means and refers to all types of voice, data and video transmission.
STGO – WHAT IS THAT?
The Special Types rules permit “abnormal indivisible loads” to be carried which exceed the weight and/or dimensions contained in the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 and Road Vehicles (Authorised Weight) Regulations 1998. A variety of unusual vehicles such an engineering plant or military vehicles, whose design and function prevent compliance with the Construction and Use Regulations, can be used on public roads in certain circumstances. The rules are contained in s.44 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 and the Motor Vehicles (Authorisation of Special Types) (General) Order of 2003 (“STGO”).
WHAT IS CLASSED AS AN ABNORMAL LOAD?
An ‘abnormal load’ is a vehicle that has any of the following:
- A weight of more than 44,000kg
- An axle load of more than 10,000kg for a single non-driving axle and 11,500kg for a single driving axle
- A rigid length of more than 18.65 metres
- A width of more than 2.9 metres
